In practice, the analysis almost always resolves at step 1 or step 2. Source Taxation vs. Ordinary Taxation

Not every person living in Switzerland files a standard annual tax return. Swiss law distinguishes between two groups.

Source taxation (Quellensteuer): Foreign nationals who do not hold a Swiss C permit (permanent residence permit) are generally subject to source tax. The employer withholds tax directly from gross salary and remits it to the cantonal authority. The most common mistake is retaining a home in Switzerland — or leaving a family member registered here — while claiming to have relocated.
